An Ode to Bad Reels: The Bat People

The Bat People is a movie which really has no reason to exist. After watching this “film”, it did not seem to serve a purpose except for wasting an hour and a half of my time with a story that did not give me any enjoyment or teach me a lesson. This movie is a string of non-logical decisions along with unexplained plot points that all lead to an unsatisfactory ending. The story of The Bat People seems like the writers stole the plots from The Fly and An American Werewolf in Paris without the suspense or charm that those films provide to their audiences.

The Bat People begins with Dr. John Beck and his wife, Cathy, celebrating their honeymoon in the best place one can think of when celebrating such a joyful occasion, the desert. Not only are they in the middle of nowhere celebrating their honeymoon while walking around the desert but Dr. Beck is also doing work at the same time. As romantic as this is, Dr. Beck has to immediately conduct some up close research of bats in the area. After a little hesitation from his wife, they both go into a cave, kiss a bit then get attacked by bats where one bat even manages to bite Dr. Beck on his forehead. After this bite happens the real boredom begins.

The Bat People

This bite is supposed to start transforming him into a bat person and this is shown by the actor twitching his eyes unconvincingly over and over again. The next scene after the bite shows the couple skiing, even though they were are suppose to be in a desert. They later go to a hot spring, once again they are supposed to be in a desert, where he breaks a glass in his hand and has to go to the emergency room. After Dr. Beck gets taped up, he informs the doctor of the bat bite on his forehead and is prescribed a tetanus shot. For some reason, the doctor proceeds to give him the shot seemingly on his genitals and then rubs the pain away because…I do not know. He seems to have a bad reaction to the medication and has to stay overnight in the hospital. He finally turns into the bat creature, even though we do not get to see him except for a close up of his eye, and he ends up killing a nurse. Due to this, we get introduced to the sheriff, who begins to investigate the creature.

The Bat People

Dr. Beck starts going on a killing spree and even while having sex with his wife he turns into the creature which terrifies her and it is implied that he passes his bat illness to her. The sheriff meanwhile tries to violate Mrs. Beck for a reason not explained except giving us another villain in a heroless movie. The sheriff ends up tracking Dr. Beck back to the cave in the desert where he first got bit. I do not know where the snow went and they end up in a scuffle, also giving us the first glimpse of Dr. Beck as a bat person and it is rather disappointing. After escaping, instead of calling for backup or informing anybody of what happened, he picks up Mrs. Beck and they drive back to the cave. They end up getting attack by hundreds of bats and she kills him and walks to the cave and the movie ends.

This movie is titled The Bat People, even though there is just one person who was turning into a bat and we barely even saw him as a bat. In fact, after he first turned into a bat he just walked around looking like a regular dude. When we finally saw his full form in the cave towards the end of the movie it just looked like they used a rejected mask from the Planet of the Apes series. There was no reason for this movie and it did not even provide any comedy due to how bad it was.

The Bat People is completely skippable.
