The Directors Guild of America released its nominations today and it could be a very good preview of what’s to come for the Best Director category at the Academy Awards.
The DGA award is one of the top indicators of the Oscars with all but seven of the DGA winners since 1948 going on to take the Best Director Oscar. The last time it bucked the trend was in 2013 when Ben Affleck won the DGA award for Argo even though he didn’t receive an Oscar nomination.
Here are the nominees:
Theatrical Feature Film:
Paul Thomas Anderson – Licorice Pizza
Kenneth Branagh – Belfast
Jane Campion – The Power of the Dog
Steven Spielberg – West Side Story
Denis Villeneuve – Dune
First-Time Feature Film
Maggie Gyllenhaal – The Lost Daughter
Rebecca Hall – Passing
Tatiana Huezo – Prayers For The Stolen
Lin-Manuel Miranda – Tick, Tick… Boom!
Michael Sarnoski – Pig
Emma Seligman -Shiva Baby
The winners will be announced at the 74th Annual DGA Awards which will take place on Saturday, March 12, 2022 at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills.
