70th Primetime Emmy Awards (The Winners List)

.The 70th Primetime Emmy Awards aired last night and while HBO is the Emmy’s champion, it had to share top honors with Netflix at this year’s ceremony.

The streaming era has already been a big game changer in the TV landscape, and at the Emmys Monday night, streamers staked a claim to awards dominance as well. Netflix tied HBO for the most honors at the 70th Primetime Emmys, with each outlet taking home 23 awards.

Also earning some bragging rights was another streaming service. Amazon took home eight awards last night and there were all for outstanding comedy series winner The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. With the streaming series taking home that honor, it was the first time a streaming show took home the outstanding comedy award and it was the first time in years that Modern Family or Veep hadn’t taken home the top prize.

HBO had the slimmest of leads after the Creative Arts awards, with 17 wins to Netflix’s 16. With two early wins for comedy series Barry, HBO took the lead at the primetime ceremony, only for Netflix to regain the lead with a strong showing in the limited series and movie categories. The outstanding drama series win for Game of Thrones in the final award of the night created the 23-23 tie.

GoT went home with nine Emmys, the most for any program, including seven, won at the Creative Arts ceremonies. The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel was the biggest winner in the primetime ceremony with five awards — outstanding comedy series, lead (Rachel Brosnahan) and supporting actress (Alex Borstein) in a comedy and writing and directing honors for creator Amy Sherman-Palladino. It has eight Emmys overall, tied for second with Saturday Night Live.

As is the case every year, there were some surprising snubs. While Game of Thrones, Saturday Night Live, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and Ryan Murphy’s Versace-centered second season of American Crime Story cleaned up last night, there were a few critically-acclaimed series that went home empty-handed.

Hulu’s critically acclaimed series The Looming Tower and The Handmaid’s Tale, last year’s best drama series winner in the absence of Game of Thrones, failed to collect any awards. Handmaid’s Tale did win three honors at last weekend’s Creative Arts Emmys ceremonies

but failed to take home any prizes during Monday night’s broadcast, including in the categories of best drama series and lead actress in a drama, which it won last year. Looming Tower, which was up for four Emmys, including for star Jeff Daniels, was completely shut out. Daniels did win an Emmy, but it was for his supporting role on Netflix’s Godless.

FX’s second installment of Murphy’s American Crime Story anthology series, The Assassination of Gianni Versace, won seven awards,  but fellow celebrated FX series Atlanta, which had the most nominations for a comedy series this year with 16, only won three awards, all at the Creative Arts Emmys ceremonies. Similarly, NBC’s breakout hit This Is Us only won one Emmy out of multiple nominations, and that prize went to guest actor Ron Cephas Jones, a trophy handed out during the Creative Arts Emmys ceremonies. Other shows winning multiple awards at last week’s ceremonies but failing to collect in the main telecast include Netflix’s GLOW and NBC’s Will & Grace. Other programs with multiple Emmy nominations that failed to win any of the awards for which they were nominated include Black-ish, The Voice, Twin Peaks, American Horror Story: Cult, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, Silicon Valley, Ozark, Fahrenheit 451 and Roseanne
