Reel Box Office Predictions: Spider-Man: Homecoming

Our friendly neighborhood Spider-Man is back this weekend with the release of Spider-Man: Homecoming, which brings the web-slinger home to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

It might sound insane but this is the sixth film to bring the wall-crawler to life and it’s the second time the series is being rebooted. Sam Raimi directed the first three films which were all financially successful but the third film took a hit from critics and fans alike, which resulted in rebooting the franchise rather than going ahead with a fourth film. The Amazing Spider-Man, which consisted of two films, starred Andrew Garfield in the title and saw the first film being mostly well received while the sequel took another critical hit and saw box office returns that needed foreign help to make a profit.

So why reboot the series again? Well, it’s all because Sony and Marvel came to an agreement to include Spidey in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This allowed him to make his debut, now played by Tom Holland, in Captain America: Civil War and secured his position to not only get his own new standalone film but also include in the upcoming Avengers: Infinity Wars. Since the character is now at home so speak, the reboot makes sense and fans will likely feel like this new reboot will be worth seeing because of that.

Spider-Man: Homecoming has a fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes of 92% as of this writing which means we have a good film on our hands. Reviews began pouring in last week which also means that Marvel and Sony knew they had a film that would work and after the results of The Amazing Spider-Man 2, these good reviews should go a long way.

Spider-Man: Homecoming has the weekend to itself as the only new major film release so it’s poised to open in a big way. I’m not expecting an out of this world debut due to the fatigue of some weary moviegoers who may be reluctant to jump into this world again but the opening will be significant enough that it should convince naysayers to eventually see it as positive word of mouth comes in. I’m predicting an opening of about $110 million.

Check back on Monday for the final box office results!
