Reel Box Office Predictions: July 28-30

The race for the number one spot could be tight if last week’s first place finisher, Dunkirk, sees a higher than expected decline.

Our new releases are The Emoji Movie & Atomic Blonde. Both films are going after completely different demos so there will be room for both of them at the box office.

Currently the race for number one is between between Emoji Movie and Dunkirk. Emoji has the benefit of family matinees, while Dunkirk has been putting up solid weekday business with the Christopher Nolan-directed movie grossing $7.3 million on Tuesday, up 15% from Monday. Given its appeal among older adults, Dunkirk looks to have long legs at the box office since that demographic takes its time to see a movie like this. I honestly think it will see a decent hold & gross about $25 million this weekend.

The Emoji Movie will make a grab at young kids starting at 5PM on Thursday in 2,000-plus theaters. That theater count moves to 4,074 by Friday. Emoji was made in Vancouver at Sony ImageWorks with Canadian rebates with a net production cost of $50 million. With the humor stylings of T.J. Miller as the voice of Gene and a character named Poop, voiced by Patrick Stewart, Emoji is looking to draw a young teen audience that’s well above the handholder crowd. I think it will come in slightly blow Dunkirk but I wouldn’t be surprised if it surged higher. I’m calling $23 million this weekend.

Charlize Theron’s ultraviolent late-Cold War MI6 spy film is opening at 3,300 theaters this weekend. Buzz has been building gradually for the film over the last few weeks & it did receive some Comic-Con love during the “Women Who Kick Ass Panel. Charlize Theron appeared personally tv the panel & the crowd seemed to enjoy what they saw. The film is 77% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes as of this writing & that should help it get to about $17-20 million this weekend.

Check back Monday for the final box office results!
