An Ode to Bad Reels: Leonard Part 6

Why would I make an Ode to Bad Reels article for Part 6 of a film franchise without doing the previous five first you ask? Well, there is a provided explanation as to why this is so. Bill Cosby stars in the 1986 classically terrible film, Leonard Part 6, where he plays a retired secret agent named Leonard. It’s brought to our attention, in the opening scene, that Leonard is so good that the previous five adventures have been confiscated for national safety. Yes, that is the explanation we receive for why this movie is titled Part 6. This gives you an instant look at the amount of bad writing we are going to uncover throughout this whole film.

Leonard

The movie begins with retired secret agent Leonard now owning a restaurant and trying to live a normal life. Out of nowhere, a gunman comes into his establishment and tries to shoot him dead. Somehow nobody else in the restaurant is aware of this intense gun fight that is happening and it is made to believe that the bullets are actually helping the cooking staff. Eventually, the gunman is killed by his own bullet which ricochets all around the kitchen. We then find out the assassin was sent by the espionage agency he used to work for with the intent of bringing him out of retirement for a special mission. I feel a phone call would have been sufficient but that’s just me.

Leonard ultimately turns down the mission so he can spend time trying to win back his ex-wife. Later, when he gets home he is introduced to his daughter’s new boyfriend who is about the same age as he is. He informs his ex-wife about this relationship and she invites him over to dinner so they can discuss it. Apparently, when he goes over to her house, instead of discussing this urgent matter she proceeds to pour food all over him to demonstrate how frustrated she still is. After this exchange, he decides he might as well go back to being a secret agent.

Leonard

The mission that the agency wants him to take on is a case where a vegetarian (important plot point apparently) scientist is using genetically altered animals in her quest for world domination. Leonard then goes to this random psychic which keeps giving him items that will be useful throughout his mission but it is never explained what their relationship is and why he is even there in the first place. Leonard puts on his goofy super spy suit and goes to his sports car with a tank cannon on top. Now, I might be wrong but if you are a secret agent, wouldn’t you want to keep a low profile so you can stay a “secret.” He arrives at this warehouse and proceeds to blow up the entrance (very subtle). Inside he has to fight these man bird like creatures which he defeats by tap dancing and then steals a sphere covered in bees for some reason.

The vegetarian lady gets very upset and she crashed Leonard’s daughters play and kidnaps his ex-wife. This leads to the absolute greatest fight scene I have ever seen. Leonard’s arrives at the location where they are holding his ex-wife and he has to fight off the lady’s buff goons, who also happen to be vegetarian, and he pulls out raw hamburger patties from his pocket and smacks them in the goon’s chest and they start burning up. I do not now if Bill Cosby or the writers had anything against or even understood what a vegetarian person was but this was just hilarious. Eventually, Leonard gets captured but ends up escaping with his ex-wife by threatening some lobsters.

Leonard

Leonard Part 6 is definitely worth the watch and it will one hundred percent make you laugh. Unfortunately, it is for all the wrong reasons. A scene where we are forced to believe about 30 tiny frogs can lift a car is turned comical by the fact that you can see the real life lift they used to make the car jump not edited out of the scene. Grab some friends. Grab some pudding. Leave the quaaludes at home and enjoy this comical disaster.
