The next installment of the Purge series will be a prequel in the dystopian horror franchise. Creator James DeMonaco will write the script for the fourth film, but will not direct it. The film will explain how Americans came to the decision to install a 12-hour period of mayhem and why it was a good idea at the time.
DeMonaco provided insight to CinemaBlend regarding the choice to do a prequel.
“That seems the natural next chapter in this. How did this country get to a place where we were now accepting this kind of atrocity, this terrible thing, each year? I think there’s something interesting in that.”
The new Purge will debut on July 4, 2018.
