The Magnificent Seven Rides to the Top of the Box Office

Denzel Washington continued to prove his box office worth with the release of The Magnificent Seven over the weekend. The film opened at number one with a gross of $35 million. It grossed just a bit more than the last Antoine Fuqua and Denzel Washington collaboration, The Equalizer ($34.1 million) from 2014. The film has a fresh rating of 63% on Rotten Tomatoes & scored an A- opening night from Cinemascore so this one might have the legs necessary to recoup its $90 million budget.

The other new release from the weekend came in second and opened below expectations. Storks opened to $21.8 million well below previous September animated offerings like Hotel Transylvania ($42.5 million) and Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs ($30.3 million). The film carries a $70 million budget and will need to see some great legs and international support in order to see a profit.
