An Ode to Bad Reels: Cool Cat Saves the Kids

Cool Cat Saves the Kids is one of the oddest movies I have ever seen. This is a children’s movie that focuses on bullying created by someone who doesn’t seem to understand the causes and circumstances of bullying. The character of Cool Cat himself is probably one of the least informed people that should be giving advice to children I have ever seen. The whole film just seems like the creator had a spare mascot outfit and a bunch of free time on his hand and decided it would be a good idea to make a kids movie.

The creator of Cool Cat Saves the Kids is Derek Savage and he plays the father to Cool Cat in this movie. Cool Cat is an overly excited and emotionally unstable 6-foot grown man in a cat mascot outfit with a tee shirt that reads “Cool Cat” that hangs around children all day and poorly gives them advice their parents should be providing at home. Cool Cat has the most annoying voice in film history and from time to time throughout the film does this creepy scratching and vibrating movement, which just seems super wrong around children. It gets even weirder when we find out that not only is Derek Savage, a human, his father but he also has a giant cat mom as well which just raises so many questions in my mind.

Cool Cat Saves The Kids

The movie begins with Cool Cat hanging out with a little girl from the neighborhood when she gets a text message from an unknown number. The text message is apparently from a bully and states that she has hair like a rat. She shortly receives a second message and instead of ignoring it or blocking the number like a sensible person would do, Cool Cat suggests that maybe the sender realized they were wrong and wants to apologize. Cool Cat wa, of course, wrong and she gets another verbally abusive message from the bully. Here is when we get our first glimpse of the bully of this story and he looks nothing like a bully usually looks. Honestly, he looks like a kid that would probably get bullied in movies like these.

As things with the bully keep escalating and building up throughout the film, Cool Cat and the little girl end up at a house in the Hollywood Hills with Erik Estrada and Vivica A. Fox. The bully somehow sneaks into this private property and begins to harass Cool Cat and the girl. Erik and Vivica give them the advice of just yelling at the bully and everything would be fine, which made me sarcastically think, great advice guys. Yet, when the bully comes back and Cool Cat puts on his angry eyes the bully does back off.

The bully keeps going throughout the film, however. In one scene where Cool Cat was teaching the kids how to cross the street by looking both ways, the bully appears and has been apparently stealing candy from babies. Real original. This sends Cool Cat into a fit of rage as he sprints across the street in anger and does not even look both ways before doing so which was historically ironic. The bully bumps into the cops and is arrested on what I am guessing are charges related to the candy that was stolen from the infants. Later, Cool Cat and the kids find a gun in a backyard. I wish I was making this up and somehow the bully is free. I guess his pops posted bail and he ends up stealing the gun. Cool Cat calls the bully’s parents, which could have been the appropriate action to all the actions the bully was doing throughout the movie when it first appeared, and the bully is arrested again.

One of my favorite scenes is when Cool Cat catches a group of kids spray painting in the neighborhood and he goes up to confront them. In the background, you can spot an innocent bystander who lives in the neighborhood come out of his house, notice there is a grown man in a cat suit yelling at children and immediately walks right back into his house. Another noticeable scene is when Cool Cat gets a threatening email from the bully and instead of ignoring it, he does exactly what the trolls wanted and get angry and sends a comeback email.

Cool Cat Saves The Kids

This kids movie is filled with horrible life lessons and one of the creepiest and annoying characters to ever grace a children’s flick. Derek Savage does not know how to write a movie for children and this film does not do any service to the effects of bullying or how children being bullied should handle the situation. With that said, if you are not a child looking for a solution to your bullying then this movie is just hilarious for all the wrong reasons from start to finish. I would highly recommend this movie for some laughs with a couple of buddies. Check out the trailer for Cool Cat Saves the Kids below.
