The Boss Baby Overperforms At Number One

It’s going to be close but The Boss Baby narrowly dethroned Beauty and the Beast from the top spot with an estimated $49 million. It currently stands as the tenth largest opening for a DreamWorks Animated title, but could find itself coming ahead of How to Train Your Dragon 2 should actuals come in just a bit higher. The result is also just a few million shy of the $52.1 million Home opened with over the same weekend in 2015 before it went on to gross over $175 million domestically and $386 million worldwide. Internationally, The Boss Baby opened in five markets last weekend and brought in $17.5 million, this weekend it added 37 markets and brought in an estimated $36.2 million bringing its international gross to $59 million. The Boss Baby still has 44 additional international markets where it has yet to be released, including the UK and Sweden next weekend.

Beauty and the Beast was no slouch in weekend three with a second place finish of $47.5 million. This brings its domestic gross  to $395.5 million after 17 days in release, putting it on a similar pace to 2008’s The Dark Knight, which finished with $533.3 million domestically. Internationally, Beauty added another $66.5 million this weekend from 55 markets, which brings the film’s global gross to over $875 million.

Opening in a disappointing third is The Ghost in the Shell with $19 million. This is below what the film was tracking with many believing it could open between $25-30 million. With an $110 million production budget, this is not a good start on the domestic front but it could possibly be bailed out internationally. Overseas, The Ghost in the Shell delivered an estimated $40.1 million from 50 international markets led by Russia where if finished #2 with an estimated $5.3 million. Additional performances include a third place opening in South Korea with $4.2 million; $3.1 million in France; $2.8 million in the UK; $2 million in Germany; $2.1 million in Mexico; $1.9 million in Brazil; $1.8 million in Australia; $1.3 million in Spain and $1.2 million in Hong Kong. Looking ahead, the film will soon open in Japan along with an April 7 launch in China.

Power Rangers fell to fourth and experienced a heftier than expected drop of 64% in weekend two and grossed $14.5 million. Does this put its sequel chances up  in the air? It’s too early to tell but this drop is pretty large after its better than expected opening last weekend. It did add $8.1 million internationally this weekend from 70 markets bringing its worldwide gross to just shy of $100 million with openings in France, Belgium, Italy, Spain, Finland and Sweden next week followed by a late April release in South Korea, May release in China and a July release in Japan. The film has an $100 million budget so it will not a bigger push internationally to correct the domestic damage that happened this weekend.
